Slaying Giants: The Giant of Nothing

A 5-Day Devotional Series

Based on Joshua 6:1-5 | Week 2 of the Slaying Giants Series

MONDAY — Foundation Day

DEVOTIONAL TITLE: You See Nothing. God Sees Different.

EMAIL SUBJECT LINE: When God's perspective and yours don't match...

META DESCRIPTION: When nothing seems to be changing, God may be seeing something you can't. Discover what Joshua 6 teaches about faith and perspective.

Monday — Foundation Day

Have you ever stared at a problem so long that the problem started talking back to you?

Today's Scripture: "Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. Nobody went out and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua, 'See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.'" — Joshua 6:1-2

Reflection: Same wall. Same city. Two completely different perspectives.

Joshua looked at Jericho and saw a fortress — forty to fifty feet of stone and brick with no obvious entrance, no visible weakness. A wall with one clear message: No.

Then God spoke. And God said, See, I have given Jericho into your hand.

Notice that God didn't say, "I will give it to you — once you figure out the right strategy." He said, I have given it. Done. Settled. Already true in God's economy, even though the wall was still standing.

This is one of the most important truths in the Christian life: what you see and what God sees are often two very different things. Joshua's eyes weren't lying to him — the wall was absolutely real. But his eyes couldn't show him everything. Only God's word could do that.

Before Joshua took a single step, before any plan was executed, he had to decide: Which perspective will determine how I walk — my sight, or what God said?

That's the same question we face every time we're staring at something that hasn't moved.

Today's Application: Identify one area of your life where your circumstances and God's promises seem to contradict each other. Write down what your eyes are telling you — then write down what God's Word says about it.

A Closing Thought: God isn't asking you to pretend the wall isn't there. He's inviting you to trust the One who already sees the other side of it.

TUESDAY — Challenge Day

DEVOTIONAL TITLE: Six Days of Silence and Nothing to Show for It

EMAIL SUBJECT LINE: What do you do when obedience isn't working?

META DESCRIPTION: Day after day, Israel walked and saw nothing change. If you've ever felt like your prayers aren't working, this one is for you.

Tuesday — Challenge Day

What do you do when you've done everything right and absolutely nothing has changed?

Today's Scripture: "For we walk by faith, not by sight." — 2 Corinthians 5:7

Reflection: Yesterday we saw two perspectives on the same wall. Today, let's be honest about how hard it is to hold onto God's perspective when days keep passing and nothing moves.

Day one: Israel marches around Jericho. No cracks. They go back to camp. Day two: Same march. Same silence. Same wall. Day three. Day four. Day five. Day six.

Can you feel the weight of that? Six days of obedience with nothing visible to show for it. No encouragement from their circumstances. No sign that any of it was working.

And here's where the real giant shows up — not the wall, but the whisper. Nothing is happening. Why keep going? If this were working, wouldn't you see it by now?

Maybe you know that whisper. You've prayed and nothing changed. You tried to repair a relationship and it's still broken. You've been faithful in the quiet, unseen things and nobody noticed. You've kept walking and the wall is still standing.

The struggle is real, and it's okay to name it. God isn't asking you to manufacture optimism you don't feel. The problem isn't that you see nothing. The problem is what nothing eventually convinces you to do — stop walking, or frantically run in a completely different direction.

Both responses pull us away from obedience.

Today's Application: Be honest with God today. Tell Him exactly what you see — or don't see. Then ask Him for the grace to take one more step anyway.

A Closing Thought: The giant of nothing is loudest right before the breakthrough. Don't let silence become your final answer.

WEDNESDAY — Application Day

DEVOTIONAL TITLE: Keep Walking: What Obedience Actually Looks Like

EMAIL SUBJECT LINE: Faith isn't closing your eyes and flooring it

META DESCRIPTION: Walking by faith isn't reckless — it's focused. Here's what practical, daily obedience looks like when the wall still isn't moving.

Wednesday — Application Day

Imagine driving through thick fog — so thick you can't see more than a few feet ahead. Do you close your eyes and press the gas? Of course not. You slow down, find the white lines, and keep your car between them.

Today's Scripture: "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it." — Joshua 1:8

Reflection: That fog illustration captures what walking by faith actually looks like. It's not reckless abandon. It's focused, deliberate, next-step obedience — even when you can't see the whole road.

This week we've established the truth (Monday) and acknowledged the struggle (Tuesday). Today, let's get practical.

Here's the chain that moves us forward: God speaks. Faith trusts. Obedience walks. God determines the outcome.

Notice what's in your lane and what isn't. Your responsibility is the walking. The outcome belongs to God. That's actually freeing — you're not responsible for making the wall fall. You're responsible for showing up tomorrow and taking the next step.

What does that look like practically? It looks like getting up and spending time with God when you don't feel like it. Praying again when your last prayer seemed to go unanswered. Forgiving again. Serving again. Inviting someone again. Showing up on Sunday again. Most of the Christian life isn't dramatic day-seven moments. Most days, obedience simply means doing today what God asked you to do yesterday.

Today's Application: What is the one next step God has clearly put in front of you? Not five steps from now — just the next one. Do that today, and trust Him with everything past it.

A Closing Thought: You don't need to see ten miles ahead. You just need to see the next step — and take it.

TEXT MESSAGE TEASER: Faith isn't closing your eyes and flooring it. It's finding the white lines and staying in them. Here's what that looks like today. Read today's devotional: [LINK]

THURSDAY — Testimony Day

DEVOTIONAL TITLE: There's a Jordan Behind You

EMAIL SUBJECT LINE: You have more evidence than you think

META DESCRIPTION: When you can't see a crack in the wall ahead, look at what God has already done behind you. Your history with God is your fuel for today.

Thursday — Testimony Day

Before Joshua ever stood in front of Jericho's wall, he had already stood at the edge of the Jordan River — and watched God part it on dry ground.

Today's Scripture: "I have seen enough to be able to trust you with what I can't see." (Based on the posture of faith described in Hebrews 11:1) "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not yet seen." — Hebrews 11:1

Reflection: Here's the thing about biblical faith — it's not believing something for absolutely no reason. It's looking at what God has already done and saying, I've seen enough to trust Him with what I haven't seen yet.

Joshua had no crack in the wall in front of him. But he had a Jordan behind him. He had the Red Sea behind him. He had forty years of God's provision in the wilderness behind him. His confidence for the unseen future was built on the undeniable past.

And if you're a follower of Jesus, you have something even greater behind you. You have a cross. An empty tomb. A risen Savior who proved that death itself isn't the final word. That's not a small thing to stand on.

Think back through your own story. Where has God come through for you? Where did He provide when you couldn't see how? Where did He heal, restore, redirect, or show up in a way that still takes your breath away when you remember it?

That's not nostalgia. That's evidence. And evidence is what faith stands on when the wall isn't moving yet.

Today's Application: Take five minutes today to write down two or three moments when God proved Himself faithful in your life. Let that list be your reminder when nothing starts whispering tonight.

A Closing Thought: You may not have a crack in front of you — but you have a Jordan and a Jesus behind you. That's enough to keep walking.

TEXT MESSAGE TEASER: No crack in the wall yet? Look behind you. You have more evidence of God's faithfulness than you realize. Today's devotional will remind you. Read today's devotional: [LINK]

FRIDAY — Forward Day

DEVOTIONAL TITLE: Our Job Is the Walking. His Job Is the Walls.

EMAIL SUBJECT LINE: Head into your weekend with this in your pocket

META DESCRIPTION: As you head into the weekend, carry this with you: your responsibility is obedience. The outcome belongs to God. Keep walking.

Friday — Forward Day

We've walked through a lot this week. And now it's time to carry it into the weekend — and beyond.

Today's Scripture: "He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." — Philippians 1:6

Reflection: All week, we've been walking alongside Joshua outside the walls of Jericho. We've seen the wall (Monday). We've felt the silence (Tuesday). We've learned what faithful next steps look like (Wednesday). We've remembered the evidence of God's faithfulness behind us (Thursday).

Today, here's the truth to carry forward: Your responsibility is obedience. The outcome belongs to God.

That's not a passive statement — it's a profoundly freeing one. You are not responsible for making walls fall. You are not responsible for controlling outcomes, forcing results, or manufacturing visible progress. You are responsible for showing up, staying faithful, and taking the next step God has put in front of you.

And here's the promise underneath all of it: the God who started something in your life is faithful to complete it. Not because you've earned it. Not because your obedience is leverage. But because He is faithful — and that's simply who He is.

So this weekend, when you gather with God's people, when you pray, when you serve, when you invite someone, when you take that next faithful step — do it knowing that God sees what you can't see, holds what you can't control, and is faithful when you feel nothing.

Keep walking.

Today's Application: Carry this phrase into your weekend: My responsibility is obedience. The outcome belongs to God. Say it out loud when the giant of nothing starts whispering.

A Closing Thought: Fear rehearses the obstacle. Faith rehearses the promise. And the promise you rehearse becomes the path you will walk — so keep walking, friend. He is faithful.
